Pampa Kshetram: The Historic Cradle of Dasara and Its Resurgence at Hampi

Dasara (Vijayadashami) holds a supreme place in our cultural heritage. However, the true historical roots of the grand Dasara festival lie in Pampa Kshetram (Hampi), where it was traditionally celebrated by emperors and spiritual preceptors (acharyas) for centuries.

From Hampi to Mysore: The Migration of a Tradition

Following the decline of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire, the grand tradition of celebrating Dasara migrated from Hampi to Mysore, where the Wadiyar kings adopted and preserved the grand royal celebrations. Although the grand public spectacle of Dasara shifted to Mysore, the original roots and core traditions of Dasara remain deeply embedded in Hampi.

Virupaksha Bazaar: From Golden Era to Solitude

In its heyday, the historic Virupaksha Bazaar in front of the temple was a bustling global market shimmering with diamonds, rubies, emeralds, topazes, and pure gold trade, hosting grand daily festivals (nityotsavas). Due to the passage of time and historical upheavals, much of this material grandeur faded, leaving parts of the ancient bazaar in a quiet, desolate state.

The Revival: Ayuta Deepotsavam and Pampa Kshetram Dasara

By divine grace and the visionary initiative of revered saints (paramapujya swamijis), the ancient traditions are being revived to restore Hampi’s lost glory.

Through these annual Dasara celebrations, the spiritual vibrance and historical grandeur of the historic Virupaksha Bazaar are being lovingly brought back to life.

అసలు దసరా ఉత్సవము అనేది పంపాక్షేత్ర హంపిలో పరంపరానుగతముగా రాజులచే , ఆచార్యులచే ఆచరిస్తూ ఉండేవారు, అది కాలాంతరములో విజయనగర సామ్రాజ్య పతనానంతరము హంపి నుండి మైసూర్ కి వెళ్ళింది మైసూర్ రాజులు ఆచరించటము మొదలుపెట్టారు,
దసరా ఉత్సవ వైభవము మైసూర్ వెళ్లినా దసరా పరంపరాగతా మూల ఆచరణ హంపి లో ఇప్పటికీ కొనసాగుతునే ఉన్నాయి ,
విరూపాక్ష బజారు వజ్ర వైడూర్య , రత్న, గోమేధిక , బంగారు వ్యాపారములతో వైభవముగా ఉంటూ నిత్యా ఉత్సవములు జరిగేవి , కాలాంతరంలో అవి అన్నీ కనుమరుగు అయినవి , ప్రస్తుతము నిర్మానుషశముగా ఉన్న స్థితి ,
భగవంతుని కృపతో మరలా ఆ పునర్వైభవమును తెచ్చుటకు వివిధ ఉత్సవములు పరమ పూజ్య స్వామివారు అయుత దీపోత్సవములో విజయదశమికి ప్రతీకగా పున ఆరంభించి నారు , శ్రీ పంపా విరూపాక్షేశ్వరునికి , శ్రీ ప్రసన్న పంపా అమ్మవారికి , విజయదశమి ప్రతీకగా , భువనేశ్వరీ అమ్మవారికి శ్రీ రామచంద్రులవారికి , శ్రీ లక్ష్మీనరసింహవారుకి , పంపాక్షేత్ర ములో ఉన్న సకల దేవతలకు ఆరోజూ దీపములు వెలిగించి , నిర్మానుషముగా ఉన్న ఆ శ్రీ విరుపాక్షబాజార్ యొక్క వైభవమును పున తెచ్చుటకు పంపాక్షేత్ర విజయదశమి దసరా ప్రతి సంవత్సరము ఆచరింపబడుతోంది

As a symbol of Vijayadashami, grand Ayuta Deepotsavas have been newly instituted.

On this auspicious day, sacred lamps are lit for Sri Pampa Virupaksheshwara, Sri Prasanna Pampa Goddess, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, Sri Ramachandra, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha, and all deities of Pampa Kshetram.
